Alterna Bamboo UV+ Color Protection Shampoo & Conditioner

6 Feb

EDIT: I NO LONGER RECOMMEND ALTERNA PRODUCTS. PLEASE SEE THIS BLOG POST TO UNDERSTAND WHY.

Alterna Bamboo UV+ Color Protection Shampoo & ConditionerAfter getting a smoothing treatment on my hair last year (at Seattle’s fabulous Pinup Salon), I was advised to switch to a sulfate-free shampoo. I didn’t know anything about sulfates, but a few minutes spent with Google convinced me that perhaps sulfates were something I should be living without regardless. I started researching sulfate-free shampoos and to my great consternation, found that many of my favorite brands use sulfates or other harsh surfectants. The good news is this opened my eyes to a whole new range of previously untried product (!) that is (potentially) less harmful to my holistic health.

I have tried and really liked quite a few new shampoo and conditioner combos, but my favorite right now is Alterna’s line. I have tried several of their formulations, and they’re all great, but, in my opinion, comparable. By that I mean I don’t notice any difference in my locks when I use their frizz-reducing formula versus when I use the Alterna Bamboo UV+ Color Protection formula. I do, however, notice a fragrance difference, and the UV+ line smells wonderful. That is personal preference, though, so you should sniff for yourself and see.

(Updating this in June and it’s still my favorite line so far!)

Oh, this is good news. I never thought much about what was in my beauty care products until I started making my own food. Now I’m thinking….I wonder if I can make my own shampoo! Ha! Until then, this is good news. Thanks for sharing. 🙂

Great! You might look into Dr. Bronner’s All-In-One if you really want to go organic with your hair care. I tried it – the shampoo works GREAT but I hated the conditioner, and I am kind of a weird princess about using matching shampoo and conditioner, so I gave up. My vegan hippie sister Gretchen swears by it and pairs it with Bumble & Bumble conditioner. Would love to hear your thoughts!

Let me try this crazy baking soda thing, and if I don’t like it it…..I’ll be looking this up. It’s on my list of things to try….! I trust you. Your hair looks great! 🙂
