Lipgloss Smackdown! TARINA TARANTINO Sparklicity Gloss vs. Smashbox Lip Enhancing Gloss

7 Mar

This weekend at Sephora, I bought myself some Tarina Tarantino Sparklicity Gloss. Much like a crow, I am easily attracted to anything shiny or sparkly, and this stuff glimmers like a diamond. I tried to smell it in Sephora but if you’ve ever been in a Sephora, you know the whole place reeks of cologne and perfume, so smelling anything beyond that is tough. However, when I remarked to my friend Caitlin, “I don’t think it smells like anything,” and she replied, “That can’t be good,” I should have heeded her sage wisdom. Earlier this year, I decided that if a lipgloss doesn’t smell/taste good, it’s not worth my time. In spite of this, I decided to pick up the Sparklicity, mainly because it was just so sparkly!

I applied it pretty much as soon as we were out the door and you know what? Not only does it not really have any smell or taste, it’s NOT EVEN THAT SPARKLY. Agh! What a let down. To be 100% fair, I got the color Paiette, which isn’t much of a color – maybe if I’d gotten something with more of a tint, I’d have been more impressed. But honestly, on my lips, it just looked like any other clear gloss. Bummer. Although I don’t really recommend it, if you’re looking for an unscented gloss with decent shine, this is a good choice. It’s just not what I was looking for.

In the other corner, we have Smashbox Lip Enhancing Gloss – I have a whole drawer of these and used one after I discovered the TT wasn’t doing it for me. KABLAM! True to its name, Smashbox smashes the competition. First, it has a nice sweet light vanilla smell. Not all fake perfumey vanilla, but ice cream vanilla – pleasant, food-like, but not overpowering. It comes in dozens of colors, they always have little value/variety sets available, some of the colors have sparkle plenty, it’s got a nice, smooth, non-sticky feel, AND I love foam-tipped applicators. I highly recommend this gloss to glossaholics like me everywhere.

WINNER: Smashbox crushes Tarina Tarantino.

A couple of ideas for you. One selfish one not. Can you give a good eyeliner recommendation for a black/brown product that is easy to apply and stays on well.
Have you tried the shellac manicure? Stays looking good for almost 3 weeks for me.

Oh good idea! I will do a couple eyeliner reviews this week. In the meantime, if you’re looking to check something out right away, I suggest Buxom Insider Eyeliner (made by the Bare Escentuals/Bare Minerals company). Comes in a great variety of shades, available at Sephora, and has good staying power for a “traditional” eyeliner!

As for the shellac manicure – yes! I have had both good and bad experiences. I have had some that lasted 10 – 14 days, and some that chipped within a couple days and then I had to deal with removing the polish, which as you know, is a pain in the rear. Where do you get yours?

Queen Nails on Mercer Island $30. I get the light pink so if there were tiny chips I wouldn’t know.
